Migration
The piece entitled “Migration” depicts a story of the Inuit migration and relocation told to Mr. Hanna by his grandfather. Migration illustrates the experience from a spiritual and realistic perspective. Using one single piece of stone from Arctic Bay, Bart has created an exquisite boat carrying an array of figures. The piece measures approximately 5 feet long and 7 feet tall to the tip of the mast. Sedna, the goddess of the sea and marine animals, sits at the rudder steering the ship. Her exquisite hair is being groomed while she sails over the water. A shaman drum dancer in the form of a bird stands at the bow of the boat, ready to take flight and investigate the surroundings. The bow is adorned with an Ivory and Baleen dragon head. A second shaman in the form of a walrus navigates the vessel safely over the waters. The vessel is powered by many sea creatures which adorn the rudder, mast and boat itself. Bart Hanna is well known for his detailed carvings of Sedna, Drum Dancers and Shamanism. His unique imagination and style can be seen throughout the migration piece.
